Things to Consider when Adopting a Pet…

People ask…why adopt?

There are thousands of animals in shelters and rescues every day. They come in every breed, every size, every age and every temperment.

There are many pure-breed dogs (some estimates are as high as 25% of all dogs in shelters are actually purebred dogs). There are also mixed breed dogs….I often say that your dog picks you. People constantly tell me they see or meet a particular dog and they just ‘know’ that’s supposed to be their dog. If you haven’t met the dog that speaks to you, here are some things to consider:

–What size dog is best for you? Do you live in an apartment? If so, a Great Dane may not be the best choice unless you are very active and can commit to walking or running with your Dane several miles per day.

–What age dog is best for you? Puppies are cute, but they are a lot of work….they need to be housebroken, trained and go through puppy stages–chewing, etc. Are you prepared and willing to do that?

–What gender dog is best for you? Some people prefer male dogs, others female. There are advantages to both. If you have a current dog, generally, one of the opposite gender will work best (less pack competition), but that’s not an absolute…just so happens that 4 of our 5 permanents are girls…they get along just fine.

–Do you want a dog that’s a particular breed or a mixed breed? Each breed has its own character traits and you should consider whether those traits fit your lifestyle. For example, terriers are working breed dogs (even yorkies) and need mental and physical stimulation daily in order for them to thrive.

There is a dog for every home and a home for every dog!
